Baby Ben...2 Months

Hey Baby Ben!

It has been two months since you were born. There have been a lot of changes since then. Some of those include...less sleep, bottles everywhere, extra laundry, less money, formula and a bottle warmer on the counter, and baby gear everywhere.
No, No, No...I am not complaining. I am thankful. You, little guy, have taught daddy and me what real life and real, unconditional love looks like.
The "before baby" me would have gone nuts with all the "stuff" that you have brought along with you. Now...I wouldn't trade it for the world.

You, Benjamin Jack, are the coolest baby in the world.

Here are a few random thoughts from the past month:

Over the past month, you have filled our hearts with joy. Your precious smile is contagious! Mommy had to go back to work (I love my new job, by the way and one day you will get to come with me.) We are very lucky to have "G" come and keep you every day while we work. You already love "G" so much! She is going to teach you tons.
More Cousin Time

Daddy loves coming home to you after work and seeing your sweet face. Everyone says you look like daddy. Not one person has said you look like Mommy. It's a good thing I carried you in my belly for 9 months! ;) You light up the world each day. We both are looking forward to the day we hear you giggle.

At the Zoo
We went to church for the first time two weeks ago and the zoo too! You were great at both places. You pretty much slept the entire time.

One thing that you really don't like is the paci. "G" tries to give it to you, but you don't take it very long. Most of the time you just spit it out.

At the Zoo
On Thursday, you will have your 2 month check-up. I am a little nervous about this, but I am sure you will be fine. You are a rockstar!

Here are some of my favorite pics from the past month.....

Ben's Birth Story

We have survived the first month of parenthood! We did it!
Since it has been a month, I finally have decided to share our birth story.

I went to my last doctor's appointment and we decided to schedule an induction date (something I thought I would never do). I decided this would be the best choice considering I only had 7 weeks of summer left and I wanted as much time with baby as I could before school started back.

We went to the hospital on Sunday, June 8 at 8:00 pm to start cervadil. The next morning at around 6:00 the nurses started me on pitocin and at 8:30 that morning the doctor came in to break my water. This was by far the worst part for me, I hated that! Soon after, I got the epidural. I am a baby when it comes to pain. The rest of the day was pretty smooth. I was progressing nicely until about 3:00 that afternoon. I made it to 5cm and then stopped. I was feeling pretty good and was
pretty much clueless it seemed. At 10:45 that night the doctor came in and said that I had not progressed in 8 hours. I was still at 5cm! The pitocin was not helping either. My contractions were slowing down.

Wilson came to visit!

I remember this moment very well. Chris had left the room for a moment and the doctor suggested a c-section as she did not think baby was going to come on his own. I just melted. I was scared and a c-section had never crossed my mind. I was not prepared for that news at all. Chris came back in the room and he could tell something was wrong. For a few minutes I didn't even share with him what the doctor had said. I finally told him. My parents came into the room. I was so torn on what to do. A c-section just sounded absolutely terrible! Keep in mind, we had been there since the night before, so far it had been 27 hours, we were exhausted! We prayed together and finally decided to have the c-section. Within minutes, I was whisked away in the OR.

I remember feeling pretty good and loopy. The anesthesiologist was pretty amazing by the way. She was with us through the whole process. I remember asking her if she had done the test to make sure I would not feel the c-section. She said she had already done it. I must have felt pretty numb. Chris sat by my head and was encouraging the whole time. He was a trooper through this all! He said the worst part was all of the sounds in the OR (yuck!). All I could feel is tugging and pulling, no pain at all!

And the best part....

at 11:36pm our sweet baby Benjamin Jack was born.
He weighed 7 pounds, 15 ounces and was 21 inches long.
He came out screaming...a beautiful sound!

We went to the recovery room afterwards for an hour. By the time we got up to the postpartum floor, it was 2:30am. My parents and sister were still at the hospital! They came in for a few minutes to see Ben and hold him. Of course, they were exhausted too! All I wanted to do was sleep.

We ended up staying 4 nights in the hospital and went home on Thursday, June 12. The nurses and doctors were wonderful and so attentive. They took care of Ben and me so well. The hardest part of the c-section was walking afterwards. But once I got up to walk, I eventually felt better and better each time. I finally felt myself (if that's possible after having a child) after about 10 days.

Bringing Ben home

There are a lot of things that no one could have prepared me for. A lot of things that did not go as planned. A lot of things Chris and I have learned over the past month. It has not been easy, but it has been a sweet, sweet time for our family. I wouldn't change a single thing about it. It was all His perfect plan for us.

By the way...Chris has totally rocked being a daddy and taking care of his hormonal wife.

Here are a few of my favorite pictures of Ben.

Happy One Month Baby Ben! You are so fun and precious. You light up our world every day.
You love smiling and we love seeing you smile! You also love to sleep and eat and eat and eat.
You are starting to make sweet cooing noises and lately you have discovered your fingers. You will occasionally put them in your mouth when you are hungry. We started tummy time and you love it too. You try to pick up your head to look at whoever is with you. We can also tell that you recognize mommy and daddy by our voices and by sight. You have just melted our hearts.
You currently weigh about 9 pounds, 2 ounces but still wear newborn size clothes and diapers. You are also a pretty calm, easy going fella so far.
 We love you stinky!

Happy 2014!!

Out with the old, in with the new!
We are excited that 2014 is here.
2013 was full of learning experiences, a few challenging times, but also some very joyous occasions.

  • McKinley June, my niece was born on January 5.
  • We got to go on vacation as a family in March to the beach.
  • We learned to trust God and God's plan more than ever because of our 2 miscarriages- January and June.
  • We did lots of renovations to the house: new roof, new drainage in back yard, new pool liner, new front door, refinished the soon-to-be nursery walls and ceiling, made over the under-the-stairs closet. These are just to name a few.
  • We celebrated our 3rd wedding anniversary.
  • Found out we are expecting a baby! Praise the Lord!
  • Spent lots of good time with friends and family.

And the list goes on...
All glory to God for all of these things that made 2013 special.

Many of you read about our journey trying to conceive. It has not been easy. It has been tough. I was able to go to the doctor and have all sorts of tests run to see what was causing the problem. The only thing that the doctors could find is that I have a gene mutation called MTHFR. The real name is
methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase.

Try to say that!

Basically it means that my body does not absorb/break down folic acid (a key nutrient in growing a baby inside of you!) The doctors believe that this had an effect on me in carrying a baby. Roughly 40% of Americans are carriers of this deficiency. But only 10% actually are affected by it.

After learning this news, Chris and I decided to try again for a third time in 2013. The doctor prescribed me Folgard twice a day. This is the medicine that helps with the MTHFR gene mutation and allows the body to absorb folic acid. I also had to take progesterone, baby aspirin, and prenatal vitamins.

So with that being said, we are looking forward so much to 2014 because we will be welcoming our precious little one that we have prayed so long about into our home.

It was so fun at Thanksgiving to share with our family the big news! We shared through a video. Here it is if you would like to watch. :) I think my nephew is pretty darn cute.

Then we shared with our friends and coworkers. It has been such a fun and blessed time. I also loved sharing with my students at work. Of course, I shared through doing some math. I made a math puzzle that when finished it said, "Mrs. Crain is having a baby!" Not to mention our little elf Louie was able to help me out.

I loved the reaction of  my students.
They were so excited! These are just a few of the comments from the mouths of the babes:

" You don't look like your big."
"Man! That's going to hurt!"
One little girl just stared and stared at my belly and then said, " Can I touch it?"

Well today the countdown begins for us to find out if it is a boy or girl....we will know on January 10th! See you soon!

I will leave you with a few more pictures from lately....

Our Bump In The Road

Life is a continuous up and down, bumpy road. We can not see often what lies ahead of us because of the bump in the road that is towering over us. It is so powerful sometimes that it overshadows us. The only place we can look and see light is by looking straight up. Sometimes these bumps knock us down. The only thing to do when life knocks you down is to pray. This life is filled with little blessings though along the way. These blessings come in the form of family, friends, notes, words of encouragement, and a million other things. You just have to be still to see them.
I chose to write this after much contemplation for many reasons.
1. I love to write and it is an outlet for me.
2. I have read stories of others going through this and it has greatly encouraged me.
3. I hope to be an encouragement to someone who reads this.
4. I seek your prayers, not pity, by any means.
5. I desire to look back at this one day and see how God has used this "bump" in the road for His glory.

So here we go,
Here is that big capital "I" word that no one wants to speak of or even that big "M" word. If you are a woman, you know exactly what those words are. Yep, that's right Infertility and Miscarriage.

Here's our story:
Chris and I decided we were ready for a child and so July 2012 we started "trying." No stress, no worries, this should be a piece of cake! December 2012, New Year's Eve, I just "knew it." I took a pregnancy test and BAM! Pregnant. I was in shock. I ran out of the bathroom and told Chris. He was playing his Xbox. He immediately jumped up to see the test. I remember him pacing around upstairs. I think he was in disbelief, just like me! It happened pretty quickly...no problem-O!
I remember thinking what a blessing this was to happen so easily and quickly. I prayed each morning for this miracle but I also prayed for my friends who were "trying." I wanted them to experience what I was experiencing....a blessing that is indescribable!

On Friday, January 18, we went to our first doctor's appointment. Doctor said, "This is going to be a perfect pregnancy!" (Thanks for the encouragement doc.) We actually got to do an ultrasound because we were unsure just how far along I was. And to the ultrasound tech's surprise....we heard the best sound....it was beautiful. A little heartbeat....measuring at 6 weeks. We decided to tell our parents that weekend because we were so excited and just had to tell someone!

On Monday, January 21, I began to bleed (sorry tmi, but true). Luckily, it was MLK day and we were off from school. My mom took me to the doctor. Our little one was still in there but the heartbeat was declining. I was told to go home and prop my feet up and relax. Oh yeah! Relax? How can I do that? So for two days I laid there on the couch.....miserable. Tuesday I woke up and my pain and aches were all gone. No pain. I knew it was over. That morning, it happened. The BIG M word. Again, I went to the doctor with Chris and they confirmed it.

Hardest thing we have ever experienced as a couple. First time I have ever seen him cry.
Our hearts were broken, just shattered. No other way to describe it.

Doctor says that it is common for women to miscarry once. (Not encouraging, neither is it encouraging when people say, well at least you can get pregnant...by the way). They really don't start testing for things until it has happened twice. (Oh No! There is no way I can go through this pain again.)

Slowly, bit by bit, piece by piece, we picked up ourselves and moved forward. Looking back, we were so blessed to see our little miracle even just for a moment. We will forever have an angel watching over us. We will one day be reunited in heaven with our baby and that gives us hope.
Our Little Blessing

Then....fast forward to this summer. All in a whirlwind, this all happened so quickly. I made an appointment to see my gyno because of my long cycles. When I went, I suspected I was pregnant, so they did a blood test to check my hcg levels. They called the next day and said yes, i was pregnant but said the levels were really low and to come back on Monday to see if they went up like they were supposed to. Monday I went, Tuesday they called...levels were 0. In nurses terms, "failed pregnancy."

Sad? Yes. Frustrated? Oh yes! It happened so quickly this time that we really never had time to get excited and then let down again. Now we are at the point of just wanting answers.
Why is this happening?

Well a little blessing in disguise...luckily I had gone to the doctor on that specific day. Otherwise this would not have been recognized as my "Second" miscarriage. Remember, you have to have two before they do any tests. Didn't think I could go through this again and I did.

I have a doctor who I LOVE. She is awesome. She said she can be aggressive with finding out what is going on or sit back, its up to me. We chose the first choice. So she did all the hormone tests, everything came back "normal." I go in a few short weeks for more tests, including an ultrasound and blood tests.

So that is where we are now. Waiting. The hardest part. Waiting. And More Waiting. Praying. Waiting some more. Trying to stay busy. Waiting. Praying. It's been exactly one year of ttc.

I have rough days if I let it get the best of me. But I know that God is taking this Mess and is turning it into our Message so that He can be glorified. Glory be to Him and Him alone...no matter what.

I have so much more to type, but I will save it for another day, so I will leave you with this. This verse gives me peace during these difficult times. God knows what we need, just at the right time.
His grace is all we need and His power is magnified through my weakness.

A beautiful day...

Today is a beautiful day...I love Saturdays and the weekend...who doesn't? After a long hard week it is nice just to be at home with my husband and dog and enjoy the simple things in life. Like sitting on my front porch enjoying the weather without a care in mind...

It is also a beautiful weekend because on this Easter weekend we are reminded of Christ's love for us. How beautiful is it that Christ died on the cross for our sins and rose again! He is alive indeed! And this day especially, I can see God's grace...

Pay It Forward...

Hello All,

I felt today was a super day to blog. I was greatly blessed today at work! I am even still excited about my day as I am relaxing on the couch. Full of joy, it is hard to relax!! At the beginning of December, I watched a segment on WREG News Channel 3 called "Pay It Forward." It is about giving back to people who have blessed you and others in many ways. Richard Ransom, the news anchor, gives someone $300 to give to a deserving person. When I watched it in December, I thought about who I would give the money to, if I could. I immediately thought of Rosa at Germantown Elementary. She is our janitor and I chose her for many reasons...She is humble, kind, giving, and hardworking. She comes to school each day with a smile on her face and joy in her heart. Our school is always squeaky clean and in tip-top shape....thanks to her. Then, when she leaves work, she often works another job and works on the weekend. Not to mention, she has a husband and three children. I just feel so blessed by her giving spirit and what she does for others without complaining. She has really taught me a lesson...and that is to always have joy in your heart. With that being said, I wrote Richard Ransom an email in December telling him about Rosa. He responded saying that he gets lots of emails and that he would consider it because two other people from GES have written him about her as well! I never heard anything back.

Little did I know...that today he would surprise me, camera in hand, ready to interview me about Rosa.
Our assistant principal opened my door and said "I need to see you in the hallway for a minute." I thought..."Oh, no...I have not followed my schedule perfectly today, I am in trouble!" To my surprise, it was Richard Ransom with a smile on his face. Of course, excitement, shock, and surprise on my face! My face turned bright red as he immediately asked me, "Why did you choose Rosa to pay it forward?" Of course, from that point on, I was just overyjoyed/speechless/nervous/bright red face/etc.....but that doesn't matter...it was all about Rosa at that point....I wanted it to be perfect.

The best part of course was being able to give Rosa $300. Although, I did not say everything I wanted to or probably sounded absolutely country and ridiculous (actions speak louder than words), it brought so much joy to Rosa, and that is what I wanted to do- to tell her how much she is appreciated at GES!! She didn't think it was real, she wanted me to pinch her afterwards to let her know that she was indeed receiving the money! Richard asked her how she will spend it, she said she would spend it on her kids. What a blessing she is to us and what a blessing today was for all involved!

Three lessons learned today- which I also taught my students right after:
1. Always pay it forward to those who deserve it.
2. Actions speak louder than words.
3. It is better to give than to receive.
